2015 PSMC Roadmap

The Photonic Systems Manufacturing Consortium (PSMC), a collaborative program between the International Electronic Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) and the MIT Microphotonics Center (MIT-MphC), created this first roadmap for integrated photonic system manufacturing. The work was funded by one of 19 grants from the NIST AMTech Program.  It was the largest grant under the program.

The goal of the PSMC was to address the technology gaps and challenges limiting the advancement of hardware technology for integrated photonic system manufacturing. The focus of PSMC was to develop a roadmap for low-cost, high-volume manufacturing of photonic systems for data and telecommunication systems. The consortium took a systems approach by looking at future system requirements for data centers and telecommunications and, using those requirements, defined performance and manufacturing technology needs. The 2015 Roadmap was created by a community of academics, technologists and corporations that focused on:

  • defining gaps and roadblocks for an integrated photonic technology roadmap
  • building a common manufacturing platform for cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing
